2. A computing device
The first thing you need to connect to the internet is a computing device.
Just a few years ago the only way to connect to the internet was through a networked computer, either as part of a large network, such as you can find at an University or through a local network such as one you may have at home or the office.
The situation is now much richer, with many other devices being able to connect to the internet. For example:
- Desktop computer
- Laptop computer
- Netbook computer
- Smart phone
- Tablet computers
- Games console
- Smart Television
- E-book reader
- Domestic appliances such a smart central heating system
These seem to be very different devices. But they all have the same basic hardware incorporated in order to make a connection.
